CIVICUS World Assembly postponed until 2010

Posted by civilsocietyindex on March 20, 2009

Dear CIVICUS partners, colleagues and friends,

CIVICUS World Assembly: 28-31 August 2009, Montréal, Canada

I am writing to advise that due in the main to the economic downturn and its impact on fundraising for World Assembly 2009 itself and the ability of delegates to secure funding for their attendance in this difficult funding environment, the Board of CIVICUS has decided to postpone the 2009 World Assembly.

This decision has not been taken lightly and we are very conscious of the fact that current crises facing the world’s citizens make it all the more important that civil society come together to discuss solutions to these challenges together with government, business and funding organisations. Your input on how alternate ways by which CIVICUS could build civil society solidarity, facilitate the exchange of ideas and information, and evolve collective solutions would be most welcome.

CIVICUS remains committed to convening the next series of World Assemblies at the Palais de Congrès, Montréal from 2010 to 2012 in partnership with our local host, the Institut du Nouveau Monde.

We apologise for any negative impact this decision may have on your plans. We will post details of the new dates on our web site as soon as possible. See

Please spread the news of the postponement via your networks to anyone you feel should be informed.

We hope that we will remain your partner of choice for co-located events you are planning for 2010. We will let you know as soon as we have confirmed dates for the 2010 event.

With best wishes,

Katsuji Imata

Deputy Secretary General-Programmes
