HEDGE (Foundation for Health Education Development Growth and Enterprise), Ghana, was incorporated under the Companies Code (Act 179) as a Company Limited by Guarantee on July 21, 2005. The foundation is a female owned and managed not for profit social development agency committed to providing community centred and driven development in Ghana. Our community development programs are implemented with the goal of ensuring all citizens have access to basic social services in health, education, and enterprise formation to secure a better standard of living.

HEDGE, Ghana’s operations are guided by the conviction that community development has to be implemented as an integrated multi-sectored process. Development projects implemented at the community level are for this reason designed, developed, and implemented from within the community to ensure complete community ownership and commitment. As such HEDGE, Ghana’s programs are implemented through the following processes:

  • Community level assessments of all social services (health, education, economic activities and civic engagement)
  • Review of the local government’s development programs to ensure programs fit into the developmental vision of the district
  • Reviews of past and existing social programs to avoid duplication and ensure complementarities
  • Community engagement to ensure broad-based participation within the target communities
  • A project design phase conducted at the community level with maximum input from the communities
  • A project implementation stage with roles clearly defined ensuring there is maximum community involvement
  • Ongoing project monitoring and evaluation

Focus Areas
In line with HEDGE, Ghana’s organisational objectives, specific government policy, and the Millennium Development Goals our areas of operations can be summarised as follows:

  • Undertake community level assessment in the areas of health, education and income generating opportunities in rural areas
  • Organise participatory programme identification, preparation, and implementation of projects in rural communities throughout the country.
  • Provide advocacy services for rural communities
  • Provide consultancy services for rural community service providers
  • Implement community health projects based on outcomes of health assessments
  • Build capacity of rural entrepreneurs to operate competitively in the market environment
  • Identify and develop trade routes within and outside Ghana to increase rural producers impact in their specific markets
