Threats to civil society in Venezuela?

Posted by civilsocietyindex on March 17, 2010

Elected in 1998, Hugo Chavez’s Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela is now more than a decade old. What does the civic environment look like now in Venezuela, and what threats exist to civil society?

One of the five dimensions of the Civil Society Index explores this: the ‘civic environment’. Now, SINERGIA, the organisation implementing the CSI in Venezuela, has also released an additional report on threats to civil society. The report, covering the period from October – December 2009, comes within the framework of CIVICUS’ Early Warning System, a project initiated by CIVICUS’ Civil Society Watch programme which aims to monitor and assess threats to civil society and practices and legislation restrictive to civil society, before and as they emerge.
